Zimbabwean-born, Johannesburg-based artist, activist, multi-disciplinary designer and illustrator Sindiso Nyoni, aka R!ot, and Isaac Zavale and Minenkulu Ngoyi from Alphabet Zoo.
Sindiso has worked with Cape Town-based illustration studio Am I Collective composing Cannes Lion-winning campaigns. He has been involved in the “Voices in Freedom” poster exhibition alongside activist artists Chaz Maviyane-Davies (Zimbabwe), Alain Le Quernec (France), and Yossi Lemel (Israel). The exhibition was launched in Mexico and went on to exhibit around the globe. He has also worked with ad agency Blackriver FC as an Art Director and formed part of the “Piñatarama 2.0″ exhibition alongside Dr. Alderete (Argentina), Alberto Cerriteño (Mexico/Canada), Team-O (Mexico), Junko Mizuno (Japan), and 34 other artists at the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City.
Johannesburg-based Alphabet Zoo’s work explores traditional printmaking, inviting collaboration from other young talented artists, illustrators, publishers, and designers. Isaac and Minenkulu both studied at Artist Proof Studios and have been exhibiting in group shows and independently for the past four years. Alphabet Zoo has been featured in “Legends Of Culture” at the renowned 12 Decades Art Hotel in Johannesburg, Sibi Gallery’s “AS SEEN ON TV,” and the 2013 graffiti and street art group show, “Two by Two Art Studio presents: AKA Exhibition.” Working from their studio in Newtown, the duo is also running the newly opened print studio Prints on Paper.
The workshop, focusing on basic print-making and illustration techniques, ran for three days, transforming Dramatic Need’s Arts Centre into a veritable print shop. Sindiso remarked that the classes were “cool” and that the 50 students who participated were “a great, enthusiastic bunch.” The trio are keen to return in September to conduct another, more comprehensive workshop as well.
